Sensei® Robotic Catheter System

What is the Sensei® Robotic Catheter system, and how is it being used?

  • The Sensei® Robotic Catheter system brings to Stony Brook state-of-the-art technology that helps doctors perform complicated medical procedures.
  • Currently being used by The Heart Center to correct irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation).

What are the benefits of the Sensei® Robotic Catheter system?

  • It replaces a complex procedure that used to be done manually.
  • The manual procedure made it hard to reach certain areas of the heart.
  • The Sensei® Robotic Catheter system allows for more accuracy, and takes far less time, which dramatically decreases the risk to the patient.

What are the signs and symptoms of atrial fibrillation that people should be aware of?

  • Typical symptoms include a racing heart or palpitations.
  • Subtle symptoms can be shortness of breath or fatigue without palpitations.
  • Atrial fibrillation can be related to high blood pressure, an overactive thyroid, congestive heart failure, diseased heart valves, but can also occur in patients with structurally normal hearts.

What makes Stony Brook a better choice than another hospital for patients with heart problems?

  • Stony Brook University Medical Center offers comprehensive care for patients with atrial fibrillation including the latest diagnostic tools, medication management, and ablation when necessary.
  • Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart arrhythmia in the United States, but the procedure to fix it is very complex and can only be done at major medical centers with a high level of technical expertise. In Suffolk County, Stony Brook University Medical Center fills this role.
  • Stony Brook's investment in the Sensei® Robotic Catheter system is additional evidence of the medical center's commitment to moving medicine forward regardless of the economic climate.
  • The Cardiac Arrhythmia Service at Stony Brook also offers the latest treatments for patients with other arrhythmia conditions including:
    • Ablation for supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia
    • Implantation of pacemakers and cardiac defibrillators
    • Cardiac resynchronization therapy
    • Laser extraction of infected or malfunctioning pacemaker and defibrillator leads
    • Evaluation and management of syncope (fainting)
    • Expert medical management of patients with cardiac arrhythmias
