diagnostic testing
Vein Duplex Ultrasound
A venous duplex ultrasound is a test that uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to evaluate the flow of blood through the veins in the arms or legs.
This test may be used to investigate the cause of symptoms of pain, swelling, and bulging veins in the leg. It is used to evaluate for the presence of a blood clot in the deep or superficial veins as well as to evaluate the function of valves in the veins. The presence of a blood clot in the deep veins is known as deep vein thrombosis. Malfunction of valves in the leg veins (also known as venous insufficiency or venous reflux) results in varicose veins.

What to Expect
No special preparation is needed for this test. Anesthesia is not required. You will be asked to lie on a table. Gel will be placed on the skin of your arm or leg, over the veins being tested. You may have to stand during part of the test to evaluate some of the veins.

Description of the Procedure
A hand-held ultrasound probe (transducer) will be placed over the veins in your arms or legs. Sound waves are transmitted from the probe into your body, and images are produced and recorded.
In general, this test is not painful. However, the technologist may apply varying degrees of pressure to the probe against your skin in order to better visualize the vein and see if it collapses under pressure. After the procedure you can get dressed and go home. Follow your doctor's recommendations.

How Long Will It Take?
The length of the test varies, depending on your particular situation. However, in most cases, it will take between 30 and 45 minutes.

Possible Complications
This test poses no known risks.

Test Results
Our vein specialists will evaluate the images and review with you the results of your test. Based of the ultrasound results, you will be provided with recommendations for the best treatment options.
