Meenakshi Singh, M.D., a nationally recognized authority in the histologic diagnosis of cancer of the breast, ovaries and endometrium, has been named Professor in the Department of Pathology at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Appointed by Kenneth R. Shroyer, M.D., Ph.D., Marvin Kuschner Professor and Chair of Pathology, Dr. Singh will facilitate the expansion and implementation of numerous new initiatives in anatomic pathology.

Dr. Singh is an expert in the field of surgical pathology, fine needle aspiration cytology, and anatomic pathology. Her expertise will help clinicians in identifying diseases and determining treatment courses for some cancers, as well as provide researchers with additional tools to develop more effective and targeted medications.

"Dr. Singh is uniquely qualified to join my research group as a key member of our rapidly expanding translational research program," says Dr. Shroyer. "Her recruitment will also have a major impact on the enhancement of our resident recruitment efforts and our resident training programs in anatomic and clinical pathology."

Before coming to Stony Brook, Dr. Singh was Professor and Director of Surgical Pathology at the University of Colorado at Denver, where she had worked as a pathologist since 1999. Dr. Singh began numerous research initiatives at the University of Colorado that will continue at SBUMC. These include the investigation of biomarkers in breast cancer and hormone receptors in endometrial and ovarian cancers.

Dr. Singh has been a State Commissioner for the College of American Pathologists and served as the Co-Director of the Hormone Receptor Core Laboratory of the Gynecologic Oncology Group. She is the author of the Digital Atlas of Breast Pathology and the Digital Atlas of Gynecologic Pathology and has also authored over 60 research papers in high-impact peer-reviewed pathology journals.

A member of the American College of Physician Executives, the College of American Pathologists and the International Society of Breast Pathology, Dr. has received numerous awards, including the Colorado Society of Clinical Pathologists’ Award for service, dedication, leadership and outstanding achievement (from 1999-2006); and several Excellence in Teaching awards from the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Dr. Singh graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree (M.B.B.S.) from Christian Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, India in 1981, where she also received her M.D. Pathology degree in 1984. She was a consultant pathologist in India until becoming a senior research pathologist at AMC Cancer Research Center in Denver, CO in 1991. She held that position until 1994. She completed her pathology residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, and a surgical pathology fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.

Dr. Singh lives in Port Jefferson Station with her husband, Rupinder Singh, M.D. They have two adult children, Varun and Nikki.
