The Stony Brook MDs are considered in the top three percent of the region’s physicians

New York Magazine’s 2011 “Best Doctors” issue features 18 full-time and voluntary physicians from Stony Brook University Medical Center. The “Best Doctors” list represents the top three percent of physicians in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area. Practicing in a wide range of specialties, the Stony Brook physicians were selected from a region that includes more than 60,000 physicians.

The “Best Doctors” list is comprised by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., which publishes Top Doctors: New York Metro Area. The “Best” from this list of more than 6,000 physicians – 1,144 physicians – are then picked and featured in New York Magazine. The selection process is based on peer nominations, followed by telephone interviews with leading specialists, chiefs of service, and other hospital personnel. Criteria for selection include professional qualifications, reputation, the ability to communicate effectively, demonstrate empathy, and other factors.

Seven of the 18 Stony Brook physicians selected for the New York Magazine distinction practice within Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital, the only dedicated children’s hospital in Suffolk County. This group includes specialists in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, Child Neurology, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Pediatric Infectious Disease, and Pediatric Surgery.

“Being selected for the New York ‘Best Doctors’ list is a fine achievement,” says Steven L. Strongwater, M.D., CEO, Stony Brook University Hospital. “Our doctors’ selection is one important indicator that illustrates their commitment to hard work and providing high quality and compassionate care to patients.”
