300 Plus Attend National Cancer Survivors Day Hospital to Host Event in 2006

On June 5, 2005, Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) hosted its first National Cancer Survivors DayŽ, an annual worldwide celebration in hundreds of communities in the United States, Canada and other countries. More than 300 survivors, guests, physicians, administrators and employees from SBUH attended the celebration at Ward Melville High School in East Setauket.

The SBUH-hosted event, called the ""Carousel of Life,"" honored the lives of all Long Island cancer survivors, particularly those treated at SBUH. The day included entertainment, refreshments and carnival games. More importantly, it brought together survivors from ages 1 through 88 with SBUH physicians and staff, and their families, in a fun and meaningful setting.

""The day reaffirmed that there is life and glorious, happy, belly laughter after cancer,"" says Linda Bily, a breast cancer survivor and SBUH Department of Radiology supervisor who organized the event. All survivors received a T-shirt and a commemorative pin. Support and reference materials on cancer care and survivorship were also available.

The non-profit National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation supports hundreds of hospitals and support groups nationwide, and is currently celebrating its 18th year. National Cancer Survivors Day has become one of the world''s largest cancer survivor events.

The faculty practices of the full-time faculty at the Stony Brook University School of Medicine include many physicians who specialize in cancer treatments, covering a wide range of conditions, including medical, surgical and radiation-based services.
