Dr. Dvorah Balsam Named Chief Of Pediatric Radiology At Stony Brook University Hospital

4/17/2006

Imaging Expert Brings 40 Years of Experience to Pediatric Specialty

DVORAH BALSAM MD STONY BROOK, NY, April 11, 2006 – Dvorah Balsam, M.D., Professor of Clinical Radiology, has been appointed Chief of Pediatric Radiology at Stony Brook University Hospital. As a pediatric radiologist, she works with pediatric specialists and surgeons in diagnosing diseases and conditions in children. Dr. Balsam is also part of the faculty that instructs and supervises radiology medical students and residents.

“Dr. Balsam’s expertise in pediatric radiology is a great resource for all pediatricians at Stony Brook and for referring pediatricians on Long Island,” says Donald P. Harrington, M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiology. “Her extensive experience enhances our services in the Departments of Radiology and Pediatrics, and her skills as a teacher of radiology add to our academic program in the School of Medicine.”

Dr. Balsam comes to Stony Brook University Hospital from Nassau University Medical Center, where she was Director of the Radiology Residency Program for more than 20 years. While there she received the honor of Teacher of the Year and unprecedented nine times. She was drawn to Stony Brook because of the many pediatric sub-specialty services the hospital offers to patients and the hospital’s use of the most sophisticated imaging equipment.

“This atmosphere allows me to work at the highest level with pediatric specialists and surgeons to guide them on diagnostic issues with children,” says Dr. Balsam. “Pediatric radiology is a unique and important specialty in assessing a child’s condition because pediatric conditions are varied and quite distinct from those in adults,” she explains.

After receiving her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in the Bronx, Dr. Balsam was a resident at Albert Einstein Jacobi Hospital. Shortly after, she decided to specialize in pediatric radiology and completed her fellowship at Babies Hospital, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center.

Dr. Balsam, a member of the Society of Pediatric Radiology, has published dozens of journal articles and presented many lectures on topics in pediatric radiology. More recent topics include urinary tract imaging in children, airway emergencies in childhood, and skeletal Sickle Cell Anemia.

She lives in Lawrence, N.Y., with her husband, Joel. They have six grown children.
