Dr. Henry Woo Named Fellow of World's Largest Organization of Surgeons

Stony Brook Medicine neurosurgeon Henry Woo, MD, FACS, has become a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the largest organization of surgeons in the world. Dr. Woo’s initiation as an ACS Fellow took place at a convocation ceremony at the College’s 2013 annual Clinical Congress where he officially earned the right to use “FACS” after his name.

At Stony Brook Dr. Woo is Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery and Radiology, and Co-Director of the Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center. The ACS bases Fellowship distinction by evaluating the surgeon’s education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence and ethical conduct.

ACS members applying for Fellowship status must meet stringent membership requirements. Among the requirements, according to the ACS, are: Fellows “must have completed advanced training in one of the 14 surgical specialties recognized by the College; must possess certification by an American Surgical specialty board; must further demonstrate ethical fitness and professional proficiency, and his or her acceptance as a Fellow of the College must be approved by three-fourths of its Board of Regents.”

Dedicated to the ethical and competent practice of surgery, the ACS is a scientific and educational organization founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical practice and improve the quality of care for the surgical patient.
