Stony Brook University Stroke Specialist Elected to American Heart Association Board

Henry Woo, M.D., to serve three-year term on Long Island Regional Board of Directors.
Henry Woo, M.D., Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Director of the Cerebrovascular Center at Stony Brook University Hospital, has been elected to a three-year term on the American Heart Association's Long Island Regional Board of Directors effective July 2012.

Dr. Woo is a practicing neurosurgeon specializing in all types of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery, as well as stereotactic radiosurgery. He is a world expert on the treatment of aneurysms and vascular malformations of the central nervous system, and offers unique expertise in dealing with complex neurosurgical problems. He holds numerous device patents and frequently contributes to peer-reviewed journals.

"Dr. Woo is a tremendous addition to our board of directors," said Kathy Munsch, Regional Vice President of the American Hospital Association. "He was selected as an addition to the board because he brings a unique clinical perspective and will provide valuable insights to the board as a world-renowned medical expert in neuroendovascular surgery."

"Heart attack and stroke are closely related, since both result from blockage of blood supply, and both can be prevented by better blood circulation," Dr. Woo said. "Through my service on the AHA board, I hope to offer my expertise in the realm of stroke care to benefit both the AHA and its partner organization, the American Stroke Association."

Dr. Woo is an Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of NYU School of Medicine. He completed a neurosurgery residency and interventional neuroradiology fellowship at NYU Medical Center. He previously practiced at Cleveland Clinic's Cerebrovascular Center before joining Stony Brook University Hospital in August 2007. He holds faculty appointments in both Neurological Surgery and Radiology with the Stony Brook University School of Medicine.

His research interests and patents involve the development of neuroendovascular devices to treat stroke and aneurysms. Through his research collaborations and participation in numerous clinical trials, patients have access to cutting-edge technology and the most advanced medical devices available. As both a neurosurgeon and neurointerventionalist, he offers a unique skill set for diagnosing and treating complex neurosurgical conditions.

Dr. Woo's professional memberships include the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the American Society of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the AANS/CNS Section of Cerebrovascular Surgery, and the World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology. He has been published widely in journals such as Neurosurgery, Stroke, Journal of Neurosurgery, American Journal of Neuroradiology, Contemporary Neurosurgery, and Critical Care Medicine.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Dr. Woo resides in Setauket, NY.
