JOINT REPLACEMENT CENTER

11/7/2002

Stony Brook Orthopaedic Associates, P.C. and Stony Brook University Hospital have announced the opening of the Joint Replacement Center (JRC). The JRC is a unique program developed to improve the delivery of joint care to patients in need of hip and knee replacement.

Dr. Louis C. Romeo, Director of the Center, is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship trained at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. Dr. Romeo places emphasis on patient education. Free monthly educational seminars are conducted by JRC staff in East Setauket, Hampton Bays and various local assisted living communities and libraries. Preoperative teaching classes are held and patient education videos are utilized to explain the entire surgical procedure and recovery process. A patient notebook is also provided which guides patients through their surgery and serves as a handy reference book for continued use during the postoperative period.

The JRC incorporates a team approach to treatment through the involvement of the surgeon, physical therapists, nurses and other professionals. However, the most influential members of the team are family members, who serve as coaches to the patient. The family members help guide the patient under the supervision of nurses and therapists. All JRC patients participate in physical therapy together in one large exercise room. It is common for patients to encourage and push each other to regain mobility and function during the recovery period. A game of indoor golf putting is an option for those patients feeling well enough. A vase with flowers is presented to each patient on the first postoperative day. A catered group lunch and a gift of t-shirts and shorts for use during the rehabilitation process are provided for all JRC patients.

The postoperative stay is usually limited to just four days. Through early planning, patient education, aggressive pain management and various amenities, the unique program offered by the JRC strives to provide the patient with a pleasurable and satisfying experience through which pain is reduced and mobility is restored.
