Nationally Recognized Breast Cancer Physician Named Associate Director for Translational Research at Cancer Center

Alison T. Stopeck, MD, a breast cancer physician and researcher, has been appointed Associate Director for Translational Research at Stony Brook University Cancer Center, announced Yusuf Hannun, MD Director of the Stony Brook Cancer Center.

"Dr. Stopeck is a nationally recognized breast cancer clinician and researcher with more than 20 years of experience in the field," said Dr. Hannun. "Her selection supports the Cancer Center's goal to provide cancer patients the best and most recent evidence-based treatments available."

Dr. Stopeck comes to Stony Brook from the University of Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson. In her role as Associate Dean for Translational Research at Stony Brook, Dr. Stopeck will ensure the most advanced oncology therapies are offered to breast cancer patients and build the program's ongoing research in new treatments and prevention strategies. In Medical Oncology, she will serve in a leadership role of the multidisciplinary breast cancer team that provides an extensive range of clinical resources and technologies for breast cancer patients including providing individualized treatment plans for breast cancer patients.

Named to the "Best Doctors of America" for 16 consecutive years, including 2014, Dr. Stopeck has extensive experience in designing, initiating, and successfully completing clinical trials. She has acted as Principle Investigator on multiple phase I, II, and III clinical trials in breast cancer and hemophilia. Dr. Stopeck is also a member of the breast cancer working group of the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and has been a study coordinator on several SWOG-sponsored trials.

Dr. Stopeck has authored over 75 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals related to clinical trials, biomarkers, or breast cancer and has authored chapters in well-known on-line references including eMedicine and UpToDate. Her breast cancer research has been continuously funded for the last 20 years by private foundations as well as by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

At the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson, Dr. Stopeck was a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Clinical Breast Cancer Program at the University's Cancer Center. She also served as the Director of the Arizona Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center.

Dr. Stopeck received her medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, and completed a fellowship in hematology/oncology at Cornell University Medical College. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association for Cancer Research, American Society of Hematology, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
