Golfers in action at a previous Long Island Educators & Healthcare Professionals Cup Golf Tournament, benefiting the ALS Comprehensive Care Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center.
Teachers and healthcare professionals will take a break from classes and clinics and take hold of their golf gear to participate in the 8th Annual Long Island Educators & Healthcare Professionals Cup Golf Tournament. The event is sponsored by the Ride for Life, an organization that raises awareness of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and funds to help find a cure for the disease. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the ALS Comprehensive Care Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center, the only ALS Association Certified Center on Long Island. The event takes place on Columbus Day, October 11, at the Spring Lake Golf Course in Middle Island.

Proceeds from the tournament will also help fund the Ride for Life ALS Scholarship Program, which assists Long Island students whose families have been impacted by ALS. Each year one or more high school seniors receive the scholarship to further his/her education. During the past four years, more than $40,000 in scholarships has been awarded to high school seniors from school districts such as Ward Melville, Kings Park, Northport, Huntington, Syosset, Longwood, and Patchogue-Medford.

This year's Cup honors two individuals central to furthering education on Long Island: Barbara Barosa, President of the Riverhead Central Faculty Association, and Chair of the Long Island President's Council; and Jeff Rozran, an English teacher and President of the Syosset Teachers Association.

Registration for the golf tournament is open and begins at 7:30 a.m. Shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Tickets include pre-golf continental breakfast, 18 holes of golf, range balls, and a post-play luncheon. Tickets are $145 per individual golfer or $575 for a foursome. Sponsorships are also available. Tee signs are $100 per sign.

Come out and golf to win the coveted trophy and bragging rights as the best teacher/health care professional golfer team. Other contests include: Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive, Putting, and Beat the Pro/Student.

In 2009, the ALS Comprehensive Care Center at Stony Brook University Medical Center became the first ALS Association Certified Center on Long Island. This distinction as a national "Center of Excellence" was announced during the SBU 2009 Ride for Life event. The Center is only the third to be certified in New York State and the 34th nationwide.
