SUNY Research Foundation Honors Dr. Sharon Nachman, SBUMC Pediatrician, as an Innovative Scholar and Researcher


Dr. Nachman Among 30 SUNY Educators Recognized at Annual Event

Sharon Nachman, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook University Medical Center, received the Research & Scholarship Award from the Research Foundation of State University of New York (SUNY) during the annual Recognition Dinner on May 2, in Albany, N.Y. Dr. Nachman was one of 30 educators from 19 SUNY campuses honored for their talent, dedication, and accomplishments in their respective fields. The award is the highest honor the Research Foundation can bestow on SUNY faculty for their outstanding scholarly and research contributions.

"Dr. Nachman has made tremendous contributions to clinical research in many areas, and she deserves the recognition as one of the most accomplished SUNY scholars," says Richard N. Fine, M.D., Dean of the School of Medicine. "Dr. Nachman is also a talented pediatrician and an international leader in the area of pediatric infectious diseases and the treatment of children with AIDS."

Dr. Nachman, Director of the Office of Clinical Trials, has been the principal investigator of dozens of clinical trials of promising medicines for patients treated at the Medical Center. These include at least 10 international trials, in areas such as new vaccines, Lyme Disease, and AIDS. She also heads the Medical Centerís Maternal Child HIV/AIDS Program.

Board certified in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and as an HIV Specialist, Dr. Nachman is a Fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Society of Microbiology. She has published extensively in medical journals on pediatric and infectious diseases topics. Among her awards are Brookhaven Town Woman of the Year in Medicine (1992), Changing the Face of Medicine: Local Legends Award (2003), and Alumni of the Year: Stony Brook University School of Medicine (2004).

Dr. Nachman has three times been cited by Stony Brook University for Excellence in Teaching Pediatric residents and has been Principal Investigator for the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development since 1992.

Dr. Nachman lives in Plainview with her husband, Steve, and their three children Dena, Josh, and Jonathan.

The 30 men and women honored are members of a university system that generated $888 million in fiscal 2006 for more than 9,800 projects funded by more than 2,400 sponsors. The honorees are scholars in fields as far ranging as medicine, engineering, literature and history.
